The number one question I get asked by people young and old is, “Ben, how do you stay so hip and relevant?” People look at me and watch me in action and they can not believe a man in his early 40’s is so cool and has such a bead on the youth culture. Just to prove it, I downloaded Rebecca Black’s song from iTunes way back, when there were less than 1,000,000 hits on youtube.Read More
Rebecca Black is a YouTube sensation. In less than one month her smash hit Friday has gotten almost 90 million hits. On the off chance you have been living under a rock, you must soak up this delicious slice of pop culture 2011.
There have been thousands of spoofs and spin offs. Most of them are poorly done and some are incredibly mean. But the spoofs that have made me laugh out loud are the ones that Rebecca Black participated in herself.
As I watched these videos, I realized a change of attitude was beginning within me. Instead of Rebecca Black being a caricature, by making fun of she actually became a human again And not only that, I was becoming endeared to her.
There is something so strange about the human condition. We have this need to put down people who are above us, to crush those who are doing better than us. And if those people more successful than us are egotistical and prideful, then the gloves really come off and it becomes world war 3 on their character. It seems that their pride and success gives us an excuse to be even more mean-spirited and hateful in our "joking." This seems to pass for normal and acceptable in the kingdom of this world.
But there is another kingdom, and upside down kingdom. And in this kingdom, pride is the enemy that pushes people away in relationship and it is humility that actually soften hearts and draws people to you. Drawn, not by force or by popularity or status, but rather, drawn in as an invitation. I know it is a little bit of a stretch, but by Rebecca Black recognizing that this song and this fame is silly and disproportionate to reality by poking fun at herself, she give us freedom to engage her once again as a human being, and not a caricature. Since she realizes that she is just a 13 year old, she gives us the freedom to treat her like a 13 year old. And how proud would we be of any kid in our ministry who pulled off something like this.
In every conflict, real or in jest, pride is the accelerant for death and destruction. Humility, the correct understanding of yourself and your surroundings, takes all the oxygen away from that fire. I hope that more and more I have a better understanding of my true self and my true surroundings, I can take myself a little less seriously and enjoy all the blessings that come my way. The simple blessing I am going to enjoy today is the fact that it is:
Friday, Friday,Gotta get down on Friday Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend Friday, Friday,Gettin’ down on Friday Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend
